Asus broadens Eee PC retail reach

Vendor introduces new partnerships with major retailers across the country

Asus has brought on eight new retailers to carry its Eee PC.

The Eee PC will now be available at Betta Electrical, David Jones, Good Guys, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, Retravision and WOW Sight & Sound. The machine was initially launched through Myer stores.

It had enjoyed strong sales since its December release, Asus said, with 80 per cent of the stock being sold through retail. Extended retail coverage would help meet consumer demand, the vendor said.

The Eee PC is now available in black and white casings. It runs on a Linux operating system and features a 7-inch screen, wireless Internet access, flash storage drive and a tough lightweight design. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Asus announced it will upgrade the Eee PC shortly with a larger screen, higher resolution and embedded WiMax capabilities. The ultramobile device retails for $499.

In a release Asus CEO, Ted Chen, said the company wanted to get as much allocation as possible from its headquarters to ensure there is stock on shelves.

The first supposed rival for the Eee PC in its niche market arrives at the end of the month in the form of CloudBook from Taiwanese vendor, Everex.
