Mitron and SMC play on Skype popularity

Mitron brings Wi-FI Skype phones to Australian users

SMC Networks is bringing its Wi-Fi Skype phone to Australia via a distribution deal with communications supplier, Mitron.

Mitron managing director, Michael Boorne, said SMC's Taiwanese parent company, Accton, was the only mass producer of Wi-Fi Skype phones globally.

With three million users in Australia, there was plenty of room in the Skype market for SMC's Wi-Fi phone, he said.

The exclusive distribution agreement between the two companies is only for the Skype WSKP100 Wi-Fi phone.

Boorne said Mitron did not want to lose focus by taking on other products in the SMC range at this stage.

The Skype-certified device allows users to access their Skype account via any Internet-enabled wireless access points using 802.11 technology.

SMC general manager, Becky Ho, said Mitron was chosen because of its clear understanding of the Internet landscape in Australia. SMC and Mitron would work together to generate broader market awareness.

"They have great credentials within the industry for communication devices," he said.

SMC was targeting corporate users as well as the home market, and that Mitron was the right fit for reaching both markets, Ho said.

Boorne also identified SMBs and high-end lifestyle users as market opportunities for the Wi-Fi Skype phone.
