Vodafone Australia has announced its rural high speed 3G network will go live during the first week in May 2009.
In its final stages of testing, the new network will replace Vodafone’s 2G coverage in major regional areas throughout Australia.
Vodafone CTO Andy Reeves said the network upgrade will generate more competition in the telecommunications market.
“We’ve managed the project in a pragmatic way to ensure quality and continuity of coverage for our customers throughout the upgrade project,” Reeves said.
Vodafone’s 3G coverage will reach 80 percent of the Australian population once the upgrade is completed.
Customers in regional areas, including Albury-Wodonga, Ballarat, Ballina, Byron Bay, Cairns, Darwin, Hobart, Lismore, Newcastle, Toowoomba, Townsville, Wollongong, and Wagga Wagga are set to benefit from Vodafone’s upgrade.
