Samsung on Friday announced its new SE-208BW Smart Media Hub. The SE-208BW is an optical disk drive that is equipped with Wi-Fi. Users can stream CDs and DVDs to smartphones, tablets, and computers.
To access the SE-208BW with an iPhone or iPad, Samsung representatives said that apps for each device would be available. A Samsung rep also said that the SE-208BW would appear on the Mac desktop as an external storage device.
The SE-208BW’s optical drive will also have write capabilities, so you can burn a disc from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The drive supports 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD reading and 8X DVD±R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD+R Dual Layer, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer, 8X DVD+RW, and 6X DVD-RW.
The device has ethernet; you can connect the SE-208BW to a broadband modem and have it serve as a wireless access point. Samsung says the SE-208BW can also be used as a Wi-Fi repeater. The SE-208BW has a USB port for connecting an external hard drive and Dynamic DNS support so an attached drive can be used as a file server. The SE-208BW also has DLNA compatibility.
The SE-208BW will be available in early 2012. Pricing has yet to be determined.
Samsung on Friday also announced a new portable Blu-ray writer. The SE-506AB is a USB-powered drive that supports Samsung’s AV connectivity technology, which allows the drive to connect to HDTVs with a USB port for media playback. The SE-506AB will be available at the end of August. Pricing has yet to be determined.
