Optus has launched its OfficeApps Mobile Security product for SMB customers which has the ability to remote lock, wipe and reset passwords for mobile devices.
The application is the newest addition in the Cloud-based Optus OfficeApps family.
Remote device locking, wiping and password reset functions are controlled through an OfficeApps portal or an authorised mobile phone.
The objective of Mobile Security is to protect personal and business data stored on mobile devices. Data is also protected by anti-virus software.
Should a worker lose a device covered by Mobile Security, a remote locate function can locate the device through GPS with an SMS sent from a secondary mobile phone.
With more mobile workers working through portable computing devices than ever before, keeping sensitive business data out of unwanted hands has become increasingly important.
In June, the telco launched the Mobile Device Management (MDM) for enterprise customers. MDM included features such as remote data wiping and device lockouts.
“OfficeApps Mobile Security addresses concerns of many SMBs having about protecting confidential information on mobile devices,” Optus SMB managing director, Rohan Ganeson, said in a statement.
“As the amount of information shared between smartphones and tablets within a small business increases, the security of these devices becomes paramount.”
The app is being powered by Optus' software partner, F-Secure.
“The rapid growth of mobile technology has made [mobile] devices prime targets for identity and data theft," F-Secure regional director of Oceania, Indi Siriniwasa, said in a statement. "Our mobile security blocks harmful websites designed for phishing or to spread malware to ensure safe browsing and protect the confidential content on your devices."
Office Apps Mobile Security will be available on a 12-month contract. It costs $5 for each mobile device but users get two-months free during the introductory period.
It supports selected devices running Google Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile operating systems. Apple's iOS will not be supported at this stage.
"Optus OfficeApps Mobile Security is powered by F-Secure and API interfaces need to be available to develop a mobile security application," an Optus spokesperson said in a statement. "As Apple does not currently allow access to security level features in their APIs, OfficeApps Mobile Security is unable to support iOS in implementing capabilities such as locking, wiping and resetting passwords on any device remotely."
