New range of projectors for home and specialised use

Epson has entered the 3D projector market with the simultaneous launch of two ranges of full high definition 1080p 3D home theatre projectors.

The range is built specifically to maintain image brightness and picture quality and aims to enhance consumer experience.

According to Epson Australia business manager of visual imaging, Bruce Bealby, Epson’s late entrance was intentional and comes at a time where the 3D market has settled into the home environment and is affordable.

The dual range, which replaces Epson’s current 1080T models, caters for two categories: family home viewing, which includes the EH-TW5900, EH-TW6000 and EH-TW6000W, and custom installers, with the EH-TW8000 and EH-TW9000W.

The home viewing range offers a 20,000 to one contrast ratio (with 40,000 to one for the wireless model), omitting at 2200 lumens. The custom installer range, on the other hand, allows for a 200,000 to one ratio, through 2400 lumens. All products project 1080p in both 2D and 3D modes.

“A major hurdle in all 3D systems is maintaining brightness and thus picture quality. Epson has addressed this by using a 480Hz Active Shutter system in its 3D projectors rather than the slower 240Hz system,” Bealby said.

During 3D viewing, the cross talk of the 3D glasses is reduced because of the increased refresh rate, resulting in greater light availability due to the minimised lens closure time. The glasses also use infrared and sync with inbuilt emitters to offer viewing from a distance of up to six metres.

The custom installer range is also able to do 2D to 3D conversion, which creates depth within 2D images by segregating each element and producing layers. At the same time, it cannot exploit the full power of 3D as the layer segregation is pushed back, creating depth, but now allowing foreground images that leap from the screen.

Each range contains a wireless model (EH-TW6000W, EH-TW9000W) to eliminate HDMI cable clutter. They communicate with other devices through either a wireless HD transmitter, which is connected to a device via a shorter HDMI cable, or directly if the device is wireless HD certified.

Prices are: EH-TW5900 - $2199; EH-TW6000 - $2499 (includes two pairs of 3D glasses); EH-TW6000W - $2799 (includes wirelessHD transmitter and two pairs of 3D glasses); EH-TW8000 - $TBA (includes two pairs of 3D glasses); EH-TW9000W (includes wirelessHD transmitter and two pairs of 3D glasses).
