APP OF THE DAY: Codify

For programmers on the go

Codify
Cost: $7.50 | Developer: Two Lives Left Platform: iPad | Version: 1.0 | 10.0 MB |

Codify is for the game programmer in us all. It’s a rare thing to have an iPad application; commercially available on iTunes, it allow you to build games and it’s a brilliant training tool for aspiring game programmers.

The software makes use of colours for keywords, important numbers and the like to make the coding easier to read and follow. Although Codify doesn’t come with any formal tutorials in Lua, the programming language that the software uses, there are plenty of sample projects to give people an overview of how the language works.

There’s only a limited range of graphics and sound effects that are available for use, and there’s no way to export or share completed projects. But, for practicing and learning programming, experimenting with ideas and for programmers to have an easy, fun way to mess around with code, this is a great, cheap application.

Just be sure you have a Bluetooth keyboard. Though games like Crysis and World of Warcraft use Lua, you don’t want to be writing things that complex on an iPad virtual keyboard.

Pros: A useful tool for leaning a useful programming language.

Cons: It’s a pity you can’t use custom soundtracks and graphics, and export your completed projects for sharing later.

Verdict: Great stuff for programmers on the go.
