Frankly, without a stylus, most art packages on the iPad are pretty pointless. The finger is a chunky replacement for a stylus, and art requires precision.
Adobe Ideas is the best possible solution for people that don’t have iPad styluses. It features auto smoothing to iron out the wobbling finger, and allows for a watered-down, but efficient range of Adobe creative tools, including the all-important layers.
It’s only real failing point is a lack of brushes and a slightly clunky way of handling colours. The $0.99 Art Set app does a far better job there, though you’ll need a stylus there.
You’ll be paying for the package (especially if you want to use layers, which is an in-app purchase), but you tend to get what you pay for with this kind of stuff. For graphic designers, marketing folks and artists looking to sketch on the go, this is an easy and accessible solution.
Pros: Good auto smoothing means this is one of the few iPad art packages you won’t need a stylus to enjoy.
Cons: It’s a virtual sketch book, not an art set. It completely lack tools to create paint brush, charcoal and pencil effects.
Verdict: Probably more tailored towards graphic designers, this is still a good app for any artists on the go.
