Art Set
Cost: $0.99 | Developer: Lofopi | Platform: iPad/ iPhone | Version 1.1 | 13.8 MB
Looking at the nice, big screen of the iPad (this review tested the app on iPad), a few applications naturally suit the form factor. Art is one of those, and Art Set, a cheap little download, is one of the best art tools available on the iPad.
It aims to recreate the experience of making art, rather than simply drawing and colouring virtual paper.
As such there are a variety of different tools that iPad artists can make use of - from paint brushes to charcoal, pencil and even sponges.
Each of these virtual tools are modeled surprisingly accurately - using a paint brush, for instance, feels like using a real paint brush.
Finished art works can be emailed to yourself for printing out later on, and although the program doesn't support full canvas-sized resolution, it's more than enough for posting to Facebook, or even your Deviantart account.
The overall package is barebones beyond providing the art tools. There are no real tutorials, and certainly no lessons on how to properly use the tools.
As such some knowledge of making art will help get the most out of the application. A stylus is also a must, as a finger is far too imprecise to work well.
Pros: Good enough to post on Facebook and co.
Cons: No tutorials or lessons.
Verdict: One of the best art tools for the iPad
