Kingston’s Wi-Drive becomes Kindle Fire friendly, and receives updates
Memory products manufacturer, Kingston, has made several announcements regarding its Wi-Drive. It is introducing Kindle Fire compatibility, has updated its existing Apple app, and is releasing a drive with increased capacity.
The Kingston Wi-Drive is a pocket-sized, Wi-Fi based portable storage solution which was first released in 2011 for Apple devices.
It utilises flash-based technology, and operates via a built-in wireless signal that voids the need for cables or an Internet connection.
Additions to the product have made it compatible with the Android-based Kindle Fire tablet through an app which can be found on the Amazon Appstore.
Updates to the existing app for Apple devices allow AirPlay support for streaming of music (that is DRM purchased content), photos and videos, as well as an “Open in” option for viewing documents with a desired app. Purchased or DRM content can be accessed through the Safari browser as long as the device is assigned to a computer using an iTunes account.
Kingston has also stated that it will be releasing a 64GB version of the Wi-Drive to join the existing 16GB and 32GB capacities.
Kingston Wi-Drive comes with one-year warranty and free technical support.
Lexar’s 155mbps USB 3.0
Flash memory products manufacturer, Lexar, has announced its JumpDrive Triton and S73 USB 3.0 flash drives.
The product, which is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, promises 155mbps read and 150mbps write speeds according to Lexar testing.
Additionally, Lexar will be releasing a range of S73 USB 3.0 flash drives which offer a wider range of capacities.
The S73 will not be as powerful as the Triton range, though, offering 45mbps read and 20mbps write speeds.
The JumpDrive Triton 16GB and 32GB capacities are available for $73.95 and $118.35 respectively, with the 64GB version scheduled for release in February for $221.90. Each comes with limited lifetime warranty.
The JumpDrive S73 range, which includes a three-year limited warranty, will be available in February for: 8GB - $19.95; 16GB - $35.95; 32GB - $64.95; 64GB - $122.95.
Both ranges are compatible with PC and Mac systems.
Quest updates its NetVault FastRecover solution
IT management solutions company, Quest Software, has updated its NetVault FastRecover continuous data protection (CDP) software.
The solution, which operates through Virtual On-Demand Recovery technology, enables the recovery of Oracle data.
Enhancements featured in the NetVault FastRecover 4.5 include real-time snapshots of Oracle databases, which are stored on FastRecover Servers. The aim is to accelerate access time upon restore initiations.
The 4.5’s built-in replication feature enables Oracle data transfer across servers, acting as a cost-effective protection recovery strategy for remote and branch offices. It also allows CDP integration with existing backup software (including third-party solutions) through CIFS export functions.
Additional aspects include: recovery for Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, and Windows file-system data, as well as extended platform support for Windows 7.
The release follows a busy December for Quest, which included its acquisition of Bitkoo, a privately-held IT entitlement management solutions company, as well as its sweep of awards at the 2011 Windows IT Pro and SQL Server Magazine Awards.
Axis’ ARTPEC-4 chip
Swedish-based network video solutions company, Axis Communications, has announced its ARTPEC-4 chip built with Lightfinder technology for sharper motion images and improved vision in low-light conditions.
The ARTPEC-4 contains improved H.264 compression to support simultaneous H.264 and Motion JPEG streams, as well as multiple streaming to optimise video streams individually.
The chip’s CPU and coprocessor is built for accelerating video analytics, promising intelligent video analysis. ARTPEC-4 also offers de-interlacing and multi-channel video ports from the one chip.
ARTPEC-4 is optimised for use with Axis branded video encoders and cameras.
