35,000 accounts compromised in Telstra GameArena hack

Third-party company that runs the telco's GameArena and Game Shop sites fell victim to a hacking attack on Wednesday night.

Telstra’s GameArena and Game Shop was hacked on Wednesday night which compromised the information 35,000 customers.

Both GameArena and Games Shop sites are operated by a third-party company. It was this third-party company’s servers that were hacked.

According to Telstra, information that may have been taken by hackers was limited to BigPondG Games usernames, email address as well as encrypted GameArena and Games Shop passwords.

No financial or credit card details were stored on the sites.

Affected customers will be contacted and will be issued new passwords.

Telstra recommends all GameArena and Game Shop customers to reset their passwords as a precaution.

According to the telco, BigPond Broadband password details have not been affected.

Late last year, Telstra suffered a privacy breach which resulted in the personal information of 800,000 customers being exposed.

The telco told security conference, AusCERT, last week that it was reviewing its security practices.
