Fixed wireless NBN to hit Cairns region

Planning has started for fixed wireless NBN rollout in areas in far North Queensland

Planning for the deployment of fixed wireless National Broadband Network (NBN) services across communities around Carins in North Queensland has commenced.

Fixed wireless and satellite services are used for areas that fall outside the NBN’s fibre footprint.

Residents across the Aurukun Shire Council, Cairns Regional Council, Cook Shire Council, Tablelands Regional Council, and Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council areas will have access to fixed wireless NBN.

Up to 5000 premises are expected have access to the service in stages starting from mid-next year. Fibre NBN is also due to be rolled out in the Cairns region shortly.

“This is fantastic news for the Far North,” Senator McLucas said. “The NBN will change the way we live and work here in far North Queensland and I am very excited by the progress we’ll see on the ground in the next 12 months,” Queensland Senator, Jan McLucas, said in a statement.

“In many parts of the Far North, people cannot access adequate broadband so this is a great outcome for our region.
