The National Broadband Network (NBN) has now been switched on in Toowoomba, Queensland About 1700 homes and businesses in central Toowoomba can connect to NBN fibre services, with work commenced or completed to more than 26,000 homes and businesses locally.
As well as Toowoomba, work is also underway in parts of Mount Lofty, Prince Henry Heights, Redwood, East Toowoomba, South Toowoomba, Mount Kynoch, North Toowoomba, Harlaxton, Withcott, Rangeville, Kearneys Spring and Centenary Heights.
“People living in Toowoomba are the first in southern Queensland to access the benefits of the NBN,” the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, said.
“There is strong retail competition in Toowoomba with six retailers offering NBN packages. This includes: iiNet, Telstra, Internode, iPrimus, TransACT and Westnet."
Conroy said more than 34,000 Australians were already connected to the NBN, as the rollout continues to ramp up across Queensland and the rest of the country.
“By mid-2015, fibre construction will have commenced or been completed to more than 678,000 homes and business across Queensland and to over 3.5 million homes and businesses nationwide.”
He used the rest of his press release on the launch to begin politicking for the newly-announced Federal Election set for September 14.
