Juniper Networks continued to gain market share on Cisco Systems in Internet core routing in the first quarter of this year, according to the latest data form Dell'Oro Group.
Juniper's market share in high-end routers - those with OC-48 interfaces and above - climbed to 38 per cent, on a two per cent revenue gain over the fourth quarter of 2000. Cisco's share dropped to 59 per cent on an 18 per cent plunge in revenue from the fourth quarter of 2000, Dell'Oro reported. Juniper's share of the high-end router market in the fourth quarter was 34 per cent, while Cisco's was 65 per cent.
The entire high-end router market saw a 10 per cent quarterly decline, from revenue of $US836 million in the fourth quarter of 2000 to $753 million in the first quarter of 2001.
Avici Systems continued to gain share in the market, with revenue growing 78 per cent quarter over quarter, for a 2 per cent share.
Sales of lower-end Cisco routers - those with OC-12 interfaces and below - also declined, according to Dell'Oro. But that may be because Cisco has much older, enterprise-focused products in that market.
The overall OC-12 market in the first quarter declined 41 per cent from the previous quarter, to $544 million. Cisco, which is still the leader in this market, saw its revenue fall 48 per cent, while Juniper's grew 194 per cent. Unisphere Solutions, the No. 3 player in the market, had a 61 per cent jump in quarterly revenue.
