Network analysis tools bolster Security Everywhere initiative

Cisco this week said it would acquire security vendor Lancope for $452.5 million to bolster its threat visibility portfolio for enterprise networks.

Lancope specializes in network behavior analytics, threat visibility and security intelligence. Its StealthWatch product is designed to continuously monitor the enterprise network and identify suspicious traffic patterns to detect attacks.

This helps network administrators respond more quickly to potential threats, Cisco says.

Lancope will advance Cisco’s Security Everywhere strategy of pervasive threat protection by adding network behavior analytics further into the network, the company says.

Lancope is a privately held, venture-backed company based in Alpharetta, GA. It employs between 200 and 500 employees, according to its LinkedIn page, and was founded in 2000. It has raised about $25 million, according to Crunchbase.

Lancope will join the Cisco Security Business Group organization led by David Goeckeler, senior vice president and general manager. Under the terms of the agreement, Cisco will pay cash and assumed equity awards, plus additional retention based incentives for Lancope employees who join Cisco.

The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of Cisco’s fiscal year 2016, which ends in January, 2016.

Lancope is Cisco’s second acquisition in as many days. Yesterday, the company acquired Internet of Things analytics company ParStream of Cologne, Germany.
