Deakin University taps Thomas Duryea for Citrix and AppSense deployment

Cloud-based Intranet access improves user experience for 53,000 students

Deakin University has called on Thomas Duryea (TD) to deploy a Cloud-based IT strategy built on Citrix and Appsense technology.

Deakin has 53,000 students on its books and many need to access the University’s intranet from their own laptops, tablets or smartphones on or off campus.

The university evaluated a number of technologies including VMware, but TD’s bid with the Citrix solution was chosen for its flexibility and user experience. The company also deployed Appsense across the entire campus.

Thomas Duryea national practice manager, Damian Zammit, told ARN the deployment was part of an offering the integrator calls "Modern Workspace” and the tender was successful because of the manageability and user experience the technology offered.

“They wanted to know they could manage the product as well as monitor it properly,” he explained.

“The Nirvana of our Modern Workspace is Windows 10, Citrix for remote apps and remote working. Deakin recieved a subset of that and we are looking to give them more solutions as they are required."

In addition, the integrator deployed Citrix NetScaler to optimise network performance and ensure the smooth running and delivery of applications despite the growing number of devices accessing it.

Zammit said the University was considering a deployment of XenDesktop but had not yet rolled it out.

Deakin University director ICT infrastructure services, Craig Warren, said the uni wanted to ensure its on-site infrastructure wasn’t limiting for students with different study habits.

“To meet these diverse needs, we wanted a digital environment that enhanced – rather than remodeled – our existing offerings to help drive uninterrupted productivity for our students,” he said.
