Digital boat driving licences can now be downloaded through the Service NSW app as part of the New South Wales digital licences rollout that kicked off in November 2016.
This follows the recent rollout of the digital boat licences and vessel registrations across the state.
Managed service provider, Secure Logic, played a hand in the design, implementation and management of the digital licence platform on behalf of the state government launched late last year.
Now, the digital licences can be accessed or renewed within minutes, according to Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey.
“Tide times, lifejackets, fuel, fishing tackle, there’s a lot to keep in mind when heading out on the water. Soon there will be one less item you will need to remember and as long as you have your phone you’ll have your licence.”
Only personal watercraft licence holders will need to carry a physical licence when out on a jet ski.
The NSW government issues more than 23 million licences and permits every year across more than 760 different categories.
“This means customers could be carrying up to six different government licences or permits in their wallet at any one time,” said Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello.
“By removing paperwork and embracing technology we are providing customers with a product that is fit for purpose in the digital age.”
The NSW government rolled out the first batch digital licences in November 2016 with the Recreational Fishing Fee licences, Responsible Service of Alcohol and Responsible Conduct of Gambling Competency cards were available for download onto smartphones and tablets.
There are plans for another common licence types to be rolled out with the Digital Driver Licence expected for the end of 2018.
The NSW plan to introduce the digital licences was first announced in November 2015 with the transition expected run until 2019.
At the time, Finance and services minister, Dominic Perrottet, said the government would target digital formats for a range of common licences, including NSW photo cards, boat and fishing licences, and eventually drivers’ licences.
"Over time, this means that citizens will not need to carry around multiple licences in their wallets," he said.
