Internet services provider, j2 Global, has acquired Sydney-headquartered cloud provider, CloudRecover, to expand the company's back-up presence across Australia and New Zealand (A/NZ).

Headquartered in California, j2 Global is a public listed company with the Nasdaq Stock Market, founded in 1995 with more than 2,400 employees in 14 countries.

CloudRecover managing director, Mac Thompson, told ARN that j2 was keen to build out its disaster recovery and backup-as-a-service offerings in the Australian marketplace.

“It was a natural fit because j2 global are the owners of the LiveVault software of which CloudRecover is a heavy user of so there are many synergies that would result from the acquisition,” Thompson said.

The CloudRecover team remains the same following the acquisition. j2 does not reveal details of its acquisitions.

Thompson said the business has suffered no changes other than receiving the support from a larger company to assist CloudRecover with its growth plans.

The company wants to grow 100 per cent in revenue and customers over the next two to three years.

“We are very excited about it, in particular the KeepItSafe business that is the New Zealand backup business which has been combined with the CloudRecover business," Thompson told ARN. "CloudRecover will now run the KeepItSafe business in New Zealand as part of j2 acquisition."

CloudRecover was acquired in May along with another three companies: US-based MyPhoneFax; Sweden-based WeCloud and Denmark-based Simitu.

This is not the first Australian company acquired by j2, in September 2014 j2 Global acquired assets of Melbourne-based Web24 including domain name, web hosting, dedicated or shared server and related services targeted at SMBs.

CloudRecover claims to operate one of the largest private clouds in Australian data centres. CloudRecover offer services including virtual private server hosting, backup and disaster recovery, storage optimisation, information governance and document management.

The company, which is part of the Federal Government cloud services procurement panel, has recently signed a partnership with Veeam becoming the latest Cloud Connect provider across Australia and New Zealand.

CloudRecover has been a HPE specialist distributor since July 2016 when HPE reshuffled its distribution agreements.
