Macquarie Telecom $80M data centre delayed

IC3 East completion now due in the second half of next year

Completion of Macquarie Telecom’s $80-million new data centre Intellicentre 3 East (IC3) has been postponed for the second half of calendar 2020.

The publicly-listed company intended to have the first data hall of the 13,400-square metre site ready by the end of this year but claimed the project was held up by planning and approval delays.

In a shareholder update on 28 June, Macquarie Telecom said practical completion of the data centre will now take place in the second half of the 2020 calendar

“This delay will not affect the company’s ability to support our customers’ current and future growth plans,” Macquarie added.

Announced last August, IC3 will come as part of the telco’s Macquarie Park Intellicentre expansion, which aims to take its capacity from 10 megawatts (MW) to 43MW total load.

The first phase of IC3 will involve a new data hall with an initial capacity of 16MW, ultimately resulting in total load capacity of 26MW and subsequent phases will add a further 17MW capacity.

The Macquarie Park Campus is specifically designed for global hyperscalers, enterprise and Government customers, with Macquarie Telecom intending to extend its ASD-Certified Government cloud into the facility when its completed.

"The new data centre will be a Tier III+ facility with an Australian leading PUE of 1.28," Macquarie Group executive David Hirst said at the time.

"It will be certified by Uptime Institute, built to meet Australian Government physical security standards, ISO 27001:2013, and support the delivery of credit card payment environments."

Macquarie Telecom also teased its unaudited FY2019 results in today's update, revealing EBITDA will range between $51-53 million.

The company added it will have delivered 10 consecutive halves of revenue and profit growth when it reveals its full year results on 28 August.

In the first half of FY2019, Macquarie Telecom made a total EBITDA of $25 million and revenue and net-profit-after-tax of $8.2 million.
