Cisco Systems has unveiled new and enhanced optical products designed to help service providers provision and manage new and existing telecom services.
The products span the edge of service provider networks to the core. They include the ONS 15310-CL SONET Multiservice Platform and enhanced Cisco ONS 15302 and Cisco ONS 15305 SDH multiservice customer access platforms for the edge; Ethernet and high-density DS-3 capabilities for Cisco's ONS 15454 metro platform; and an "any-service, any-port" line card for the ONS 15600 at the core.
The Cisco ONS 15310-CL enables SONET customers to deploy private-line and switched-Ethernet services that support link capacity adjustment scheme, virtual concatenation and generic framing procedure without having to redesign or disrupt their network. This one-rack-unit edge platform is interoperable with Cisco's widely-installed ONS 15454 SONET multiservice provisioning platform (MSPP).
Link capacity adjustment scheme allows for dynamic resizing of SONET pipes. Generic framing procedure was devised as a way to offer more bandwidth-efficient ways of packing Ethernet traffic into a SONET/SDH transport network. Virtual concatenation allows carriers to build pipe sizes arbitrarily to accommodate different traffic types.
For Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) networks, the enhanced ONS 15302 and ONS 15305 systems also now support private-line and switched-Ethernet services. These edge platforms are designed to be interoperable with existing ONS 15454 SDH MSPP infrastructures.
The Ethernet line card for the ONS is designed to help carriers migrate to optimized data services. The high-density DS-3 line cards are intended to help customers save termination costs and physical space on systems used to deliver TDM services.
The "any-service, any-port" line card for the ONS 15600 adds OC-3, OC-12 and generic framing procedure-based Gigabit Ethernet bandwidth to service providers' core networks through small form-factor pluggable optics. Cisco also announced a single-slot cross-connect for the 15600 that is higher performance and uses less power than the platform's current cross-connect card.
The SSXC enables customers to transparently pass the overhead of SONET/SDH and supports more than 32 two-fiber bidirectional line-switched rings.
The ONS 15310-CL costs US$7,500 for a TDM-only version, and US$10,000 for TDM and data. Cisco did not disclose pricing for the other new and enhanced products, all of which will be available in December.
