Sun launches site for Web developers

Sun Microsystems has unveiled Dot-Com Builder, a resource Web site designed to harness and distribute Web-programming knowledge from leading developers on the Web. The site will aim to be a resource for Web developers who create applications using Java, extensible markup language (XML), and other server-side scripting languages.

Incorporating a mix of content and community in the form of articles, real-life developer accounts, technology guides, product profiles, tutorials and online forums, Sun hopes the Web site will connect developers and foster an open debate about the latest Internet and e-commerce technologies.

The content and dialogue facilitated by the forums will create a knowledge base that will help build more reliable, scalable and secure systems which are critical for doing business on the Web, Sun said in a statement.

According to the company, the site will be devoid of theory and marketing hype. It will be practical, incorporating real-world and credible accounts of programming into its case studies and tutorials. It will also provide non-partisan product profiles and reviews, helping users weigh in on the benefits of certain programming languages or platforms. A "People Directory" will link programmers to experts in programming languages.

A user will have to register to gain access to all the articles and online forums on the Web site, and Sun will have the right to pre-screen and block content, according to a legal statement posted on the site.
