  • Motorola demonstrates 64k wireless

    Motorola has demonstrated at the CDMA Americas Congress in San Francisco an end-to-end solution for wireless data at 64Kbps. The company said its 64Kbps techno-logy will be available to service providers in the US in the first quarter of next year. According to a Motorola official at the conference, delivering the solution is the first step in a strategy that will lead eventually to third-generation (3G) packet data services at 384Kbps or more.

  • Network gear to extend broadband's reach

    Networking vendors last week announced moves to extend broadband services to customers they formerly could not reach. 3Com, Cisco Systems and Pulsecom highlighted products that overcome limitations of high-speed data access technologies, which run over existing coaxial cable and copper-wire infrastructures.

  • Web switches rev up capacity

    Network infrastructure vendors are gearing up to deal with exploding demands on Web servers, promising to keep resources available and to minimise the wait for users. The newest breed of Web switches, a variation on "server switches" designed to link servers with load-balancing and anti-redundancy capabilities, offers the capability to discover detailed information about Web sessions so one can be treated differently than another.

  • Cisco converges on voice gear

    Cisco Systems this month is aiming at enterprises and service providers with products for carrying voice, video, and data on one network. Cisco has also announced availability of its first product sets for packet-based telephony in small and branch offices. They include Cisco's first phones, based on IP handsets it acquired through its 1998 purchase of Selsius Systems.

  • 3Com, StorageTek to tout SAN links

    Looking to spread deployment of storage area networks (SANs), 3Com will provide turnkey systems that combine Storage Technology's (StorageTek) storage devices and software with 3Com connectivity devices. The two companies will ensure the interoperability of 3Com's Host Bus Adapter with StorageTek's storage hubs, switches, disk arrays, and tape libraries. These components will be available in bundled solutions.

  • 3Com forms wireless alliance with Symbol

    3Com's expected leap into wireless LANs later this year will leverage upcoming products from Symbol Technologies -- including portable phones, adapters, and hubs -- letting users make calls or exchange data across the LAN from anywhere within a networked building or campus.
