IDC: PC market rises 19 per cent in Q2 in Asia-Pacific

China helps region back to strong growth with netbooks and laptops driving growth

Lenovo has continued to dominate the Asia-Pacific PC market as preliminary Q2 figures from analyst firm, IDC, show a return to growth after two quarters of decline.

The region (excluding Japan) experienced a 19 per cent quarter-on-quarter rise for 8 per cent year-on-year growth in the second quarter of the 2009 calendar year to hit 19.9 million units shipped; beating forecasts by six per cent.

Netbooks and laptops drove most of the growth with the South-East Asian market leading the pack.

Lenovo maintained its leading market share position with 18.5 per cent (up from 16.3 per cent in Q1 for year-on-year growth of 7.3 per cent), while HP was second (16.2 per cent, up from 15.6 per cent in Q1 with 25.1 per cent year-on-year growth). Dell came in third with Acer not far behind.

In a statement, IDC Asia-Pacific director personal systems research, Bryan Ma said China’s spending helped boost the region.

“Ongoing consumer interest in portable PCs will continue to be the key moving forward, especially as both low-cost mini-notebooks and new ultra-thin notebooks help to drive the market into next year," he said.

Last week, IDC reported strong interest in portable computers, including netbooks and laptops, helped mitigate the effects of the recession, though worldwide PC shipments still fell by 3.1 per cent from the same quarter a year earlier, to 66 million units. IDC had originally projected a drop of 6.3 per cent.

In late June, IDC’s Australian operations reported the domestic PC market suffered a three per cent drop in Q1, 2009 but is already on track to resume growth.
