Telstra has invested in another two datacentre deployments within Equinix’s Australian facilities.
The telecommunications provider has expanded into Sydney’s SY3 and Melbourne ME1 (Equinix’s first international business exchange datacentre which will be opened in the coming months).
The move intends to cater for increasing demand from datacentre customers across Australia for low-latency, high-throughput content delivery and telco capabilities.
Equinix said by establishing a point of presence (PoP) in the soon-to-be-launched ME1,Telstra can expand its services to support key IP and ethernet traffic and Cloud services for Melbourne customers.
The additions build on Telstra’s existing presence within Equinix’s Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney locations, and are expected to enable the telco to increase traction with Asia-Pacific multinationals using Platform Equinix.
“The increased network bandwidth enables Telstra to manage more international customers coming to the Australian market,” Telstra fixed and data access engineering director, David Plitz, said.
The Equinix platform currently hosts more than 4500 customers, including 1000 network providers, of which 120 are accessible in Australia.
The $60 million ME1 will provide a total capacity of 1500 cabinets, with the first phase of 375 scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of calendar 2014. Equinix will construct a specially built 105,000 square foot building shell to house the datacentre, which will allow for future development.
