Extreme Networks and two of its partners, Laminar and Serenity IT, have deployed an end-to-end network system for Gold Coast Somerset College.

Somerset College has just over 1,400 students enrolled every year from primary to secondary school.

The Extreme solution included both wired and wireless products to support the school, the growing number of devices connected at any time and to support students. According to the vendor, Somerset’s IT team now has “unprecedented” access to security and visibility of their network.

The college had its entire network revamped in order to meet its performance and resilience requirements.

Extreme worked closely with Somerset’s IT leadership team to design and deploy a network solution that provides a 10 Gigabit Ethernet core, edge switching, and enterprise-grade wireless access.

Extreme’s Summit X670 Series 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches, X440 Salable Edge switches and AP3825i and AP3935i for 802.11 wireless access were all included in the project.

Brisbane-based Laminar was involved in the wireless scoping components and, also based in Brisbane, SerenITy was involved in the security scoping.

Somerset also deployed Extreme Management Center along with ExtremeControl to aid compliance with Somerset’s security and IT governance requirements, and ExtremeAnalytics, giving the College policy-enabled switching for network automation that increases service delivery speed.

“Providing a world-class IT environment at Somerset College is critical in providing an outstanding learning environment for our students and staff,” Somerset College dean of information technologies, Lisa Thomson, said.

“Extreme Networks was an obvious choice for us when rebuilding our network infrastructure.

"The company has a proven track record in understanding the unique needs of the education sector and we believe our environment now will meet our requirements for years to come, while allowing us a firm foundation on which to continue to grow and develop."

With Extreme’s solution for network management, IT staff are now able to ensure security, audit, and compliance policies are managed network-wide for all students, more than 300 staff, and supporting over 2,500 devices.

“Somerset College is now operating one of the most advanced networks in Australia in the K-12 education sector,” Extreme Networks Australia and New Zealand managing director, Chris Georgellis, said.

“They are a real showcase of what is possible in providing students and staff with the very best network environment to assist in the education mission of the college.

"We are proud to have played a part in bringing this state of the art network environment to transform Somerset College’s IT environment.”
